Parent Newsletter - December 2015

Dear Parents/ Guardians & Families:

It seems like every time I sit down to write my parent newsletter I say to myself, I can’t believe how fast the year is going.  As we all know, December is here and with that comes the holiday season. My hope is that you enjoy time with your family and friends, and you are able to rest and take in this special time of year. During the month of November, we had a number of successful events happening here at the school. Our first marking period ended on November 6. On November 17th, we had parent-teacher conferences, which gave parents and teachers the opportunity to meet and discuss their child performance.  On November 25th, I.S. 339 and the community took time to celebrate the diversity of our students with food and to celebrate the learning that is taking place here at I.S. 339.  We had a variety of dishes from different countries and we would like to thank you all for making this festivity a success.

Here at I.S. 339 we love working together with parents to bridge the gap between home and school. It is an important partnership that will assist your child in becoming successful.  With the busy holiday season approaching, time can sometimes slip away, or we may feel that there is not enough time to accomplish the goals we have set.  An important life skill that we can assist our students with is time management.  Education World, an educational website, gives us various ways educators and parents can help students with time management. Some suggestions include 1. waking up with an alarm clock each day, which gives them time to get ready and assists them without feeling rushed.  2. Providing a magnet/corkboard or some sort of means for your child to collect important information about school events, activities, or dates.  3. The use of a calendar either electronically from our school website or printed document to record your child’s upcoming activities.  This can help your child track deadlines and more.  4. Breaking long-term projects into smaller tasks and setting completion goals can help students not become overwhelmed.  These are just a few ways that we can help our students with time management.

A great way to stay connected to I.S. 339 and your child’s academic progress is on this website, look at our calendar for events.  If you have questions or concerns please call, email, or send a note with your child. Our main office number is 718-583-6767.

There is always something special about this time of the year. Regardless of ones religious affiliation and regardless of the commercialism in our city and stores. A spirit of joy and sharing always seems to prevail during the holiday season. Keep in mind that the best thing you can give your child is “time”. Let their joy, excitement, and sense of wonder inspire you to keep the spirit of the season alive with your children, family and friends. These experiences will add richness and meaning to your life.

We appreciate how dedicated and involved the parents of students are here at I.S. 339. We thank you for your support. The I.S. 339 staff extends warm wishes to you and your family this holiday season. We hope that it is filled with holiday cheer.

Thank you,
Kim Outerbridge
Principal

Dear Parent/Guardians & Families,

November is here and it is report card time already.  Tuesday, November 17th is Parent-Teacher Conference Day.  The conferences will be held from 1:00pm to 3:00pm, and 5:00pm to 7:30pm.  All students will be dismissed at 11:50am on Tuesday November, 17th.  Please arrange for your child to be picked up at that time since the staff members must have lunch and prepare for the afternoon conferences.  Report cards will be distributed at these conferences.  No report cards will be sent home with students.  You must have a meeting with your child's teacher to receive his or her report card.  It's important for parents to attend this conference so that your child's teacher and you can discuss your child's progress in school.

PHIPPS after-school program has started, if your child has not returned his/her application, please do so as soon as possible.  If your child needs another application, he/she can see Mr. Martin in the main office.

Emergency blue cards are required for each child in attendance at IS339.  We have received 92% of lunch forms.  If you have not done so, please complete the required form.  Some parents received a bill last school year because they didn’t return a lunch form.  I want to say thank you for your continued support to those who did turn in lunch forms.

Please continue to follow our school safety policy.  All parents, guardians, and visitors must show photo identification when visiting the building.  All visitors must go to the main office once you have signed in at the School Safety desk.

Parent Newsletter - October 2015

Dear Parent/Guardians & Families:

Have you received a phone call from our School Messenger? Each day, we make an effort to call the home of any student who is absent from one or more classes.  Attendance is extremely important.  Your child cannot learn if he or she is not here each and every day.  If you get this phone call, please realize that we want to make sure that you are aware of the student’s absence.  It is our goal to work with you on making sure that your child is in school.  A student can only miss 10 days throughout the entire year in order get promoted to the next grade.  Please help us focus on the importance of being in class everyday.
