Parent Newsletter - March, 2019

Dear Parents/ Guardians & Families:

Much like many parts of the US, the weather has been unusually fair.  We haven't had too much snow like in the past year. Students are definitely experiencing the variety of weather winter can bring to New York city. The third marking period is an optimal time for learning here at I.S. 339.  All students will be taking the NYS ELA examination on April, 2nd &3rd  and the NYS Mathematics examination on, May 1st2nd There are approximately less than 30 days until these critical exams!  Please encourage your children to continue to take advantage of all of the extracurricular academic programs IS 339 has to offer ELT Extended Learning Time occurs every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday from 2:40pmTo 3:55pm. We also provide Saturday Academy from 8:30am-1:00pm. If you have any questions about your child’s involvement in any of our extracurricular academic programs, please contact your child’s assistant principal, guidance counselor or homeroom teacher. As we all know if your child misses this exam it puts him or her in jeopardy to repeat the grade. Mr. Echavarria will be making wake up calls to remind students to come early for these exams. For more updates please check our school website

We began the third marking period. Teachers and advisors have submitted second marking  period grades. Parent/Teacher conferences, will be held on March 26, 2019 during the two convenient sessions. There will be an afternoon session from 12:30pm-2:30pm and an evening session from 4:30pm-7:30PM. By parents attending this conference it helps to communicate to parents the areas their child are excelling in and to give them specific ideas of how to improve upon their child’s performance in school. Teacher parent conferences are used as a platform in creating a lasting bond with the parent and school in order to increase the likelihood of academic success for their child.

Every year, all parents, all teachers, and students in grades 6 - 12 take the NYC School Survey. The survey ranks among the largest surveys of any kind ever conducted nationally. The Survey helps school leaders understand what key members of the school community say about the learning environment at each school. The information captured by the survey is designed to support a dialogue among all members of the school community about how to make the school a better place to learn.

Survey results provide insight into a school's learning environment and contribute a measure of diversification that goes beyond test scores on the Progress Report. NYC School Survey results contribute 10% - 15% of a school's Progress Report grade (the exact contribution to the Progress Report is dependent on school type). Survey questions assess the community's opinions on academic expectations, communication, engagement, and safety and respect. School leaders can use survey results to better understand their own school's strengths and target areas for improvement.
